Living anew in the kingdom of God

"He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." Colossians 1:13-14, the Journaling Study Bible (ESV), 2023 by Crossway

By Kathy Leigh Berkowitz

As a child, I saw an artist's rendition of Jesus knocking at a door, and I longed to begin my journey with Him.

I have heard it said that people can argue theology all day long, but nobody can challenge your testimony.

It is personal.

The themes of darkness and light have been with me this lifelong journey.

And scriptures that mention that contrast especially lift my spirit.

At the end of a frustrating day, I told someone close to me, "I just want to be a better person."

For me, it meant dwelling on the bright things of the day, and casting away the darkness.

Some call it living "kingdom minded."

Modern day culture is somewhat familiar with kingdoms and the contrast between darkness and light.

Movies, books, and video games set up the familiar scenario.

This morning, as I read these verses, I thought about what it means to be kingdom minded.

To be brought into a kingdom is a way of life. A purpose unfolds. A longing fulfilled. A centering of body, spirit and soul with the heart of God.

Many kings arrange their armies to deliver a people in conquest.

Yet one sent Himself to make that sacrifice.

It is a humbling thought, this forgiveness of sins.

How beautiful is the Light in this kingdom.

How lovely a journey, as the kingdom travels with us wherever we go.
