Pouring from a full pitcher

The owner of a venue designed for small gatherings and nurturing the spirit said something profound that spoke to the spirits of the 20 some women assembled in the parlor for a tour.
The room was comprised of movers and shakers, community heavy hitters - whether well known or not.
Addressing the lives of women on the go, who pour out to their families, communities, and businesses daily, she said, "Add yourself to the list."
She found that she too had needs .. physical, emotional and spiritual .. that were being neglected as she cared for the world.
"I now book time for myself," she said. And what that looks like is a long walk, or a workout, time to read and meditate, time for an unrushed cup of coffee .. and more.
It differs for every person.
Self care is not selfish.
I once gave a talk to a college class about overcoming trauma and how it is important to love yourself.
I drew .. initially .. snickers from my classmates in my speech class as I gave my end of the year speech .. when I said I want to introduce you to someone who is dear to me, whom I love and highly regard.
As I flipped around a picture frame with a photo of me, giggles began. My professor broke into a smile. And then I shared my testimony of my journey of healing after having been sexually abused as a child.
The room then went silent and everyone was immediately attentive.
The Bible says "love your neighbor as yourself," I told them. "And if you do not love yourself, you will find it difficult to love your neighbor."
Afterward, three people reached out to me - away from the class - to share their similar story.
Add yourself to the list.
The beautiful soul before us at the venue shared "I book time for myself now."
With calendars overfull and "no time" for the important things in life: faith, family, rejuvenation, we will find we have nothing left to share with anyone else.
What does that look like for you?
May this season of light warm our souls and inspire us to draw close to God and live for him - even as we manage ourselves.
