Consistency pays off

It's amazing what happens when tiny adjustments are made to an otherwise routine life.

I ate spinach.

I'm sure you're wondering what spinach has to do with a spiral staircase, but to me, it's the formality of changing your diet.

For the last two months, my sugars have been much higher than usual and it takes fewer carbs to increase them, a real warning sign that yes, change must be made.

Being that I needed to eat snacks between meals (honestly, some days I get tired of the motion of eating, but sigh, it's necessary), I was up to like 4 snack packages of peanut butter crackers per day.

It's almost 800 calories right there, 100 grams of carbs, 1200 mg of sodium, and 32 grams of fat.

Another thing to factor in .. I work a rather nice desk job (I love it and the people with whom I work).

However, with the total lack of exercise and the yucky diet (3 days a week at fast food places), my health was suffering.

So rather than continue to spiral, I took charge.

Substituting a fruit or vege and cheese for one of the cracker meals, and a cup of yogurt for the other, then cottage cheese or a celery stick and hummus for the others .. these were initial steps.

I have returned to the gym, but am doing some strength training at home also.

I've lost 9 pounds in one month. My pants are looser around the waist. I am liking the progress.

On good weather days, I take a lunchtime walk also.

My sugars are improving, but am still working on leveling the ship as it totters precariously on this wicked swing of sugar ups and downs.

I'm not there yet, but I am working on it.

I guess to me, that is the most important thing.
